What is the number one quality you look for in talent?
Rigor. It’s the difference between getting a job done just to check it off the list, versus applying deep critical thinking and executing tasks both thoughtfully and thoroughly. I appreciate and value people who don’t skimp on the details.
What is the very best career advice you’ve ever received?
In Todd Henry’s book Herding Tigers, he suggests that creative leaders must create environments in which people simultaneously feel a sense of protection and challenge. Protection without challenge can result in complacency, while challenge without protection often leads to burnout. But when both coexist, people thrive. I love that idea, and it’s shaped the way I try to lead creative teams.
What part of your role as a leader do you find most rewarding?
I’m a big fan of strengths-based psychology, so I find a lot of joy in identifying people’s individual skills and talents, then putting them in situations where those strengths can be applied. While a younger version of me would have found it more rewarding to build up my own personal body of work, today I find it more fulfilling to create conditions where others can achieve the best work of their careers.
